Influenced by medieval stories of courtly love and gallantry, and showing a joy in portraying the natural world, the Pre-Raphaelite artists of the late nineteenth century were true romantics. The women who modeled for them (and thus inspired them), with their ethereal, delicate features, redefined feminine beauty. One of the loveliest of these muses was Jane Morris. With her lush tresses and her sensuous, but demure pout, Janey won the heart of more than one of these passionate young artists. She was married to William Morris, the creator of the Arts and Crafts movement, but she was the object of an unrequited love of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, as well. Many of Rosetti's most famous paintings, including Beata Beatrix, featured Janey's beguiling beauty. His love was to remain unrealized, though. Jane stayed true to her husband, William. |
