and modest, this actress and renaissance woman was not afraid to be
bold. Her honest and upfront behavior never overshadowed her talent. She
was the actress, brilliant, and realistic, with a powerful stage
presence, and an expressive voice that carried throughout the theater.
She was born in Paris in 1844 where she also started her career.
Eventually, she traveled to London, and from there toured America. In
between her portrayals of classic dramatic heroines such as Cleopatra.
She managed to paint, sculpt, and write, all of which she excelled at.
To the scandal of theatrical traditionalists, she played male roles,
even Hamlet! her love of her craft carried into her old age, despite
