Julia Grant
Julia Dent Grant grew up in a typical wealthy Southern home. She met twenty-two year
old Ulysses S. Grant for the first time at her family estate. She and Ulysses both
loved novels and both were raised in a strict Methodist home. Julia's father didn't
want them to be together. He wanted her to marry someone wealthier and more successful.
However, the couple became secretly engaged and finally married in 1849. Mrs. Grant
was totally devoted to her husband and family. During the Civil War, she joined
her husband at any safe opportunity. Her father's fears were proven wrong when
Ulysses S. Grant became President of the United States. Mrs. Grant had a sense of
style that was never extravagant but highly refined. She transformed the then shabby
White house into one of elegance and warmth, welcoming visitors with grace and
compassion. Married women of her time were expected to wear their bridal tiaras
to important social occasions, and she never missed an opportunity to do so.
At the same time, she was described by her many guests as unpretentious
and friendly. Her primary intentions while in the White House were to be an
excellent wife and mother; policy and business were never allowed to interfere.
